Great bit, Dan.

Even after 18 years of teaching, I almost never know how to handle situations like the one you describe in this post.

But I definitely know that I give classroom mulligans to the kids that I like -- and I'd never thought about those mulligans in a negative way before.

So Jane is having one bad day and Sally is the same behavior problem today that she is everyday ... why would I treat them the same? It isn't a matter of going easy on the kid I like; it's about treating students the way they have proven they deserve to be treated.

I think you missed a key piece about Jane and Sally. Jane has a great track record. She is human. Sally is a snarl bucket everyday. You are comparing apples to oranges.
