Ariel, I think that compassion for other living things is the real problem. I don't just mean animals. In my daughter's high school foreign language class today, kids were openly making anti-Semitic comments. The one that made my daughter start to cry was: "What's wrong with making fun of Jews?" The teacher--to our mutual horror--heard it all and said nothing.

I understand the sentiment, my son's mouse died and I just got a new one and he didn't know, but obviously the kids or kid shouldn't be hurting animals.
