Very thought-provoking post!

It always amazes me how arguments about what parents "should" be doing somehow displace common-sense prescriptions for how schools and outside organizations can work together to help children in distress.

It also amazes me that the extreme stress and privations many parents who live in poverty face every day don't seem to affect judgments about what parents "should" do.... Schools and communities can give them a hand, too....

You're absolutely right, but so are those teachers you disagree with. Someone needs to be accountable for the children. Some people should not be allowed to have children at all. The solution to almost all education & child care problems is fewer children with better resources per child. Parenting license.
