Renee,
I remember the first time I learned about Japanese Lesson Study from Dr. Catherine Lewis at Mills College in Oakland. She described going to Japan and being amazed by this deep process teachers were engaged in, where they were watching one another teach, probing to see what the students were struggling with, and then reflecting and revising together to arrive at lessons that really responded to their students, and built their understanding around the trickiest concepts. She asked them where they got these ideas. "From America," they told her! They had paid attention to teacher research and inquiry in the 1960s and 70s, and had adapted what they were seeing to come up with something which some of those driving reform seem to have largely forgotten.
