And we wonder why Finland is so far ahead of us in education.... Finland poverty rate = 2%!! THEY address the issues!

Thank you all for the kind comments. I was really starting to wonder whether others felt this issue. I find it particularly distressful that places such as Finland and Singapore have taken the best ideas from AMERICAN educational research and put them to work for all their children.

Sometimes I think we're fighting the wrong battle, spending resources to create schools that can overcome the impacts of poverty instead of fighting poverty itself. Having taught in both high and low income areas it really saddens me when the message is that teachers in low income schools don't do enough when in reality many do so much more.

If you are not already aware you may be interested in looking at the Abbott legislation in NJ that used "separate but equal" to help make school funding more equitable in NJ ( at least between the highest and lowest income school districts)

There are a lot of great points in this article, but the one I wish more realized is about the lack of trust that exists in most disempowered communities for public instiituttions. Thank you for consistently speaking truth.
