My friend and fellow Commission member, Mary Tedrow, also has some reflections on our work at Walking to School which I encourage you to read.

Renee,

Yes. I completely agree that we need to develop consistent, rigorous standards for the teaching profession. As a matter of fact, the teaching unions need to morph into a professional organizations that support teachers in attaining these high standards and continuous growth and improvement. Unions need to move away from the political arena, stop protecting teachers who shouldn't be in the classroom, and encourage the highest levels of expertise possible. Our students and children deserve no less. I recently wrote a blog post addressing some of these issues.

I'd love your feedback and would like to continue this dialogue. In my opinion - it's the crux of ed reform. If our voice is to be hnored, respected, and acted upon, we need to be professionals. Change starts with us.
