Hi,
My name is Courtney Mathis, I am a student in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class. I enjoyed your blog post, it is interesting to see the broad view of peoples reaction toward social networking in schools. I am on the border when it comes to this topic. I think social networking is a great tool to use in schools, and has the possibility to get students to enjoy school work more. But, I also think that students might abuse these tools. It would be great if there was a social networking site just for schools. One that required a school ID to log in, but also gave the students freedom to talk to each other just like facebook. I will be leaving a summary about my visit to your blog on my my EDM310 Class Blog on March 6, 2011.

I'm sorry, the link I posted to my class blog is not responding. Here is another link.

louise

I have been saddened by the way our students have used computers to spend their entire class time playing on facebook. In retrospect I believe it is because these are poor young teens, who do not generally have access to the internet at home, and are also humans who would rather avoid learning and prefer to avoid things beyond their range of challenge.
Honestly, it would be fine if we had a class to teach appropriate use of facebook and googledocs to work collaboratively, but the present informal play is being done in math class at the expense of math learning (and we have state requirements for math). Does it help to know how to facebook with bad spelling, if you can't add (really) and have no high school diploma?

Social media had helped me in a lot of things. I wasn't able to directly approach the right way before but I am increasingly getting to know about its ups and down. Thanks for this nice post.. Keep it up.

social media for schools

I agree with the idea in your blog. Social media is very helpful but we need to use it responsively and safely.
