Bill,

As a fellow TED-head (Can I kidnap that phrase for this context?), I felt myself nodding throughout your post. I think any industry can have a tendency to become insular, but a career in education can become especially isolating unless as individuals we take responsibility for our own learning by constantly exploring new contexts for creativity, innovation and big ideas. This is what propels me, like you, to spend hours on my Google Reader, StumbleUpon, Facebook, and Pintrest accounts. I love feeling connected to the best of my world (education) as well as the best in the worlds of interior design, art, communications, marketing, etc.

One non-educator to follow is Seth Godin (http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog). He is known as a 21st century marketing guru who leverages social media and the web to model the effective marketing for today's generation. His brief blog posts usually serve to challenge a widely held belief or way of thinking, and he is famous for his proverb-like sayings. I love to muse over their implications in my life and career, even as they are not specifically aimed at an educator demographic.

I look forward to reading the other suggestions posted to grow my non-educational related reading and add to my repertoire of "TED in my head" contributors.

As I continue to find myself in a strange new world on a daily bases, your post is very timely and exactly what I needed. Here is another one that I regularly follow and read:
